Private Water Taxi into the BVI
So you have decided to transit through the US Virgin Islands to get to the BVI instead of flying straight into Tortola. But how do I get from St Thomas to Tortola? Ever considered a private water taxi?
In the past many visitors used the popular option of the local ferry. However, in more recent times, the local ferry has become a lot less favorable due to increased ticket prices, over booked ferries, long lines and infrequent schedules.
Since COVID the private water taxi’s have become the most convenient way to make the short crossing. There are many available options but the companies we recommend are either Ocean Dreams Water Taxi and Island Time Water Taxi.
Once you arrive into Cyril E. King International Airport on St Thomas you will be greeted by your driver who will direct you straight to the land taxi and take you on the 30-40min drive across to Red Hook. You will then board your water taxi and be taken straight over to the British Virgin Islands. The journey to Soper’s Hole Marina will take approximately 20-30mins where you will clear customs and immigration.
Your private water taxi will then take you directly to your yacht and drop you off alongside. You can request drop offs all over the BVI including Soper’s Hole Marina, Nanny Cay, Virgin Gorda, Scrub Island, JVD, Guana etc. or you can request a direct service to your yacht wherever it may be anchored or moored.
When you contact your water taxi company for a quote, the price given should include your journey (either one way or return), departure taxes, cruising permits, customs and immigration fees, environmental levy’s and any other port related fees.
Water taxis are a lot more flexible when it comes to pick up times starting from as early as 8.00am. If your flight arrives later than 3.30pm your company will do their best to accommodate by requesting after hours clearance from the BVI Customs and Immigration offices.
Water taxis can take up to 11 or 12 guests dependent on the company you choose and some have a minimum charge of 6 persons.
Once you book your luxury yacht charter through D’Berg Travel, we will be happy to assist you with your travel arrangements from the USVI into the BVI.
So sit back, relax with a drink in your hand (most companies offer water, soft drinks and beers onboard) and enjoy a hassle free journey over to the BVI.
